Interactive media and games increasingly pervade and shape our society. In addition to their dominant roles in entertainment, videogames play growing roles in education, arts, science and health. These talks bring together a diverse set of experts to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on these media regarding their history, technologies, scholarly research, industry, artistic value and potential future. As the speakers and title suggest, the series also provides a topical lens for the diverse aspects of our lives.

Steve Sims, Human Motivation, Gamification and Secrets to Creating Successful Behavioral Programs. When it comes to customer engagement, employee collaboration, productivity and happiness, many companies operate reactively instead of proactively. Management tires of losing top talent or revenue. They seem shocked when their users aren't engaged, progressing or learning, yet they do little to actively prevent it. Customers want to be engaged in the experience and employees want to know their career matters on a personal, company and societal level. In this talk, mediaX Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Badgeville Chief Design Officer, Steve Sims, walks through how Digital Motivation and gamification work and can be used to create and maintain user centric programs that deliver benefits for user and company alike.
Steve Sims is a well-known gamification expert and currently the Chief Design officer at Badgeville, a leading gamification platform. Steve and his team have delivered 100’s of solutions for areas ranging from employee engagement, support communities, and performance management systems to loyalty programs and health care systems. Steve has broad experience in game design, development and production across all major platforms – web, mobile, console and PC. He started his career at Electronics Arts and EA Online where he was an Executive Producer responsible for Madden NFL Football – the #1 selling sports video game franchise in North America. He also led EA’s earliest forays into the online market, including Fantasy Sports and Casual Games. He has worked in the gaming industry since with notable roles including Director of Operations at Gemini Mobile Technologies where his team launched the first 3D virtual world on iPhone as well as Vice President of Product Management and Service Operations at MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) provider Outspark where he managed their portfolio of Free 2 Play Games. Steve has a BSEE from UCLA and a Masters in Computer Engineering from U.S.C.
