New campus-wide RFP focuses on online media contentJANUARY 17, 2005. The latest campus-wide RFP from Media X focuses on online media content. With the ongoing trend for online content providers to allow users to tailor a content portal to meet their own preferences, there is a growing need for studies into the ways that users interact with content, the economics of information and how users perceive the value of the consumed content, how users tag and structure content (information personalization), how providers tag and structure content, and how providers may better tag and structure content to best facilitate easy mapping processes from the provider’s categories to those defined by the content users. Related questions include the mechanisms that facilitate user customization and delivery by the provider of appropriate supplemental content such as targeted online advertising. In addition, there is a need for research into technological, procedural, and/or legal mechanisms that can facilitate consumer publication and use of material in online forums such as blogs or P2P networks, including issues of Internet law and personalization technologies. Those mechanisms should both allow for the creation, expression and use of content by consumers and also ensure appropriate protection for the rights of all relevant parties in their digital content. Research into these areas will also be supported by the provision of two one-year Kozmetsky Research Assistantships (KRAs) that will be funded from a generous gift to Media X from George and Ronya Kozmetsky. Click here to see the full RFP (in PDF format). This RFP is the eighth to be issued since Media X was established. The innovative, campuswide RFP process is just one of several mechanisms Media X uses to encourage, support, and coordinate research into interactive technologies at Stanford.
