Media X supports advanced research, outreach, and education across a broad range of issues at the intersection of people, computing and communication technologies. Media X provides a means for member organizations to provide support for our activities in these areas, and to become more closely involved with Stanford's research activities than they could otherwise.

Membership Benefits:

Media X members can benefit from the exchange of creative ideas, interact with researchers on critical questions, brainstorm on innovation, collaborate with other member companies, and make important connections.

Media X has an open and collaborative culture and outlook; it also has trusted relationships with its members, who will have access to premium content. Members’ interests spark the creative assembly of faculty and student talents for exploring the intersection of emerging science and design in the member’s market sectors. By engaging with faculty from multiple schools at Stanford, Media X members interact with an expansive range of ideas, often resulting in surprising insights to problems and innovative approaches to new opportunities.

An annual Theme Day is planned for each Affiliate Member and Strategic Partner. Following discussions with the member company, Media X arranges a day of presentations by Stanford researchers whose studies are relevant to a question or theme of interest. Member companies choose their invitees to this meeting.  Meetings usually take place at Stanford University.  In some cases other arrangements have been made.

Strategic Partners participate in planning and discussions for shaping and implementing Media X Research Themes.  Results of Media X Research Themes are shared with all members and are eventually reported in the public domain.

Benefits for all Media X Members include:

Invitations to Media X conferences, workshops, symposia, and formal presentations by faculty and students on new and ongoing research, providing opportunities for informal exchanges of ideas among industry representatives and Media X researchers;

Notice of activities at Stanford University that might be of interest to its members.

There are three levels of membership in Media X:

Media X membership fees provide unrestricted support for Stanford research activities. Costs of Media X membership are as follows:

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP: Minimum of $300,000.

AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP: $50,000.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP: is availabe for start-ups and non-profit organizations. $10,000. and $25,000.

Media X funds may be used to supplement sponsored research projects at Stanford that are funded through sponsorship external to Media X research activities.

Separate from Media X research, any Media X Member may discuss the sponsorship of a specific research project (“Sponsored Project”) with a Stanford faculty member who will be the principal investigator directing the Sponsored Project.  The sponsoring company will negotiate terms and conditions of the Sponsored Project with Stanford Industrial Contracts Office. In such cases, the sponsoring company will pay the full cost of the project, including direct and indirect costs.

Additional Opportunities for Media X Members:

Media X Visiting Scholars and Researchers:
An employee of a Media X member company may be hosted by a Stanford research laboratory for on-campus research interaction. Visiting Scholars participate in observational roles; and Visiting Researchers participate in research activities in conjunction with Stanford guidelines. The Media X Visiting Researcher program helps world-changing innovators from industry and non-profit organizations become part of the Stanford community to amplify the impact of their remarkable activities. Visiting researchers are drawn from the many disciplines that reflect the diversity of the Media X community.  $75,000 each approved employee per year.

Media X Research Themes:
Around critical issues at the intersection of people and advanced communication and information technologies, Media X seeds innovative, interdisciplinary, concept-proving research.  Media X Strategic Partners participate in discussions about research questions and processes.  In conjunction with the membership cycle or at any time, Media X members can contribute to Media X Research Themes and thereby participate in the research processes. A Research Theme may originate from members or from Media X; any members may participate. Minimum contribution per member for Research Theme participation is $50,000. Minimum funding to launch a Research theme is $300,000; generally, Media X Research Themes are launched with $500,000. Results of Media X Themed Research are shared with all members and are eventually reported in the public domain.

Media X Themed Workshops and Seminars: Media X members can make contributions to support themed workshops and seminars.
