Science Storytelling & The Paradox of Suspense
Storytelling is one of the most effective tools leaders can use. Effective stories spark action, communicate who you are, transmit values, tame the grapevine, share knowledge, foster collaboration, and lead people into the future. Choosing the right story for the situation and telling it in an appropriate way differentiates leaders in business, education and public spheres. Expert science storytelling is essential to promote public support for research funding for science.

Scott Z. Burns, Award-winning Producer/Screenwriter & mediaX Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Scott is a writer, director & producer. His credits include: the original screenplay for Side Effects, a psychological thriller starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Channing Tatum-which received the coveted Golden Tomato for 2013- directed by Steven Soderbergh (produced by Burns, Greg Jacobs and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura), the original screenplay for Contagion, directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, and Jude Law.
Brian Knutson, Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Stanford University. His laboratory uses multiple methods (psychometrics, psychophysiology, brain imaging and pharmacology) to investigate neural mechanisms that underlie emotional experience, and explores implications of this work for clinical disorders of affect and addiction, as well as for economic decision-making. Their discovery that neural activity correlates with expected value and can be used to predict choice (including financial risk taking and product purchases) has seeded new interdisciplinary fields including neuro-economics, neuro-finance, and neuro-marketing.
Davis Masten, Co-Chairmain, the Presidents' Circle, The National Academies. Davis has been a MediaX Distinguished Visiting Scholar since 2008. Davis co-chairs the Presidents' Circle of the National Academies, including the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council. He also chairs the advisory board of Quantified Self Labs.
