This year’s invitation-only conference, attended by sixty people from twenty affiliate companies, and an additional 200 people (representing over 100 companies, and all seven schools within Stanford), showcased some of the foundational research at Stanford that can translate into innovation in industry.

After an opening affiliate-only meeting, 22 faculty from a wide range of disciplines presented brief overviews of their work, and made themselves and their graduate students available for one-on-one conversations throughout the conference.  In addition, several keynoters from industry presented provocative views about the evolving role of participative media and issues surrounding effectiveness for corporations in this rapidly evolving world.

Several experimental tools were described and demonstrated, including TAG, DIVER and Media X Works testbeds, which were distributed to attendees at the end of the conference.  One popular inclusion this year was the Addictionary LeXicography contest, which garnered an ABC News OnLine column for the winning word = WoWover!

Media X is an industry affiliates program that builds bridges among the best scholars at Stanford - both faculty and students - and thought leaders from influential companies to address questions of real importance within both academia and industry. Our activities are driven by a steadfast belief in the inspiration that emerges at the intersection of industry need and academic research; at the intersection of various disciplines addressing the same question; and at the intersection of people and technology. A complete description of the Media X program is available at: http://mediax.stanford.edu
