90 minute sessions with Stanford research presentations and discussion:
Monday Afternoon, March 3:
Human-Technology Interactions for Energy Efficiency
Session Leader: James L. Sweeney, Director, Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency, Yang & Yamazaki Environment & Energy Building.
Smart illumination, autonomous appliances, balanced energy cities, geographically distributed technical teams working on energy sourcing. This session explores the chain of human-machine interactions on which new solutions to energy efficiency will depend.
Participation in Mixed Realities
Session leader: Jeffrey Schnapp, Professor of French & Italian and Comparative Literature, and Director of Stanford Humanities Laboratory.
This session presents approaches to understanding the ways in which people participate at the intersection of immersive and physical environments, examining three distinct domains of intersection: a) mixed reality approaches to culture and history; b) Virtual Worlds and real world law; and c) medical training and techniques that employ the virtual in the service of the real.
Tuesday Morning, March 4:
Neuroscience, Emotions and Modulation
Session leader: Anthony Wagner, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Director, Stanford Memory Laboratory.
Recent findings in neuroscience that have important implications for understanding emotion and choice in people’s use of technology and in developing information technologies to modulate the transition from intention to action and software for presence and interaction.
Collaboration: People, Creativity, and Media
Session leader: Renate Fruchter, Senior Research Associate, Department of Civil Engineering and Director of the Project Based Learning Laboratory.
This session will report new studies on advanced communication technologies used for collaboration in educational, rehabilitation, and organizational applications, including a global teamwork ecosystem, enlightened trial and error as tools for design thinking, extreme design entrepreneurship, and crossing the physical and virtual realms.
Tuesday Afternoon, March 4:
Virtual Worlds
Session leader: Pat Hanrahan, Canon USA Professor of Computer Science.
Current research on design criteria, software tools and interactive platforms to accelerate development, motivate engagement, and influence involvement in virtual worlds.
